The Essence of Abstract Art

The love of abstract art stretches far beyond its vibrant colors and seemingly random shapes and forms. It captivates us because of its undeniable power to ignite our curiosity, to push the boundaries of our imagination, and to challenge our perception of what art can be. But what exactly constitutes abstract art, and can it portray some resemblance of realism and nature-inspired forms?

As you probably know abstract art was created out of a desire to create altered depictions of a subject or concept. But what you might not know is that the abstraction in art can extend itself slightly on a varying scale. And by varying the degree of abstraction some artists are able to manipulate and interpret reality to create entirely new compositions that can also retain the inspiration of the real world.

The Allure of Abstract Nature Art

Did you know that much of the wall art displayed in homes today contains at least some element of realism? That may be one reason why abstract nature art has become so popular. By blending recognizable hints of the natural world with expressive color and movement, artists create a style of modern abstract wall art that feels both familiar and wonderfully unexpected.

Observers are naturally drawn to these pieces because they capture the beauty of nature—sunsets, water, flowers, landscapes, and light—while translating them into flowing forms, vibrant color fields, and emotional energy. In this type of artwork, the subject is only the starting point; the real magic lies in the feeling it creates.

Artists who create abstract landscape art and nature-inspired abstract paintings often spend time observing the rhythms and balances found in nature—the way waves move, how light dances across water, or how colors shift in the sky at sunset. By intuitively echoing these natural patterns, abstract artists can express a wide range of emotions through movement, texture, and color. The result is artwork that feels alive and engaging.

When viewers experience these paintings, they often sense something both exciting and familiar at the same time. That connection to nature helps spark imagination, making abstract nature wall art especially powerful for modern interiors where people want art that feels inspiring, calming, and full of life.

More Examples of Nature-Inspired Abstract Art

An artist may also mimic the same color combinations in a gorgeous sunset while excluding the forms of the landscape. Doing so, an artist is able to create minimalist abstract landscape art that is not solely about the landscape, but rather the emotion the landscape can bring.

Other examples of abstract nature art could be the simple inclusion of organic shapes, blooming flowers, shimmering light patterns, or earthen texture into an artwork that is entirely abstract and different from these subjects. By just including a slight amount of realism there is an allure and connection that yields a deeper curiosity for what the viewer is observing.

Final Thoughts

Abstract nature art is a modern and contemporary invitation to explore the endless possibilities of creativity while also feeling connected to the world around us. It reminds us that art doesn’t always have to depict reality, but can instead be inspired by reality to manifest our innermost thoughts and emotions. Abstract nature art is a balance of the new and exciting with grounded familiarity. And the resulting artistic effects of nature-inspired abstract art can convey a gamut of emotions, from tranquility and happiness to amazement and reflection, forging a deep personal connection with the artwork.

About The "Bursting Sun" Painting

I created this painting in 2009 when I was displaying my art at shows and galleries. The whole idea of creating this abstract landscape painting was to be an expressive channel and to take part in the creative process of sharing an inner joyful feeling. I believe I used to say it’s more of an inner space than an actual place. The golden highlights, rich colors, and expressive texture brought a new emotion to my painting style. Harnessing the energy of the sun was part of my goal as well as expressing an appreciation of life and creation.

Over the years I’ve had many offers for Busting Sun. It became one of the few landscape paintings I did not want to sell. But other than self gratification, there really is no point to art if it is not shared, so eventually it will be passed on or sold to somebody.

Expressing With Poured-On Paint Texture

Pouring latex paint onto the canvas to build layer after layer was an expressive process free from restraint. There is medium speed string-like texture throughout the entire canvas.  And there is a slow, thickly applied paint texture for the land, which if I can recall correctly was done with a piping bag.  And then there is quickly flung-on paint texture for the energy of the sun and reflections in the water.

Transitioning colors were added over areas and also removed, leaving behind lower lying areas of unique darker tones and a highlight on the higher texture.  What a joy it was when I added gold paint here and there, blending it throughout and wiping it out to achieve a hidden glow.

All of my acrylic paintings take shape a little bit on their own. Sure, many start with a plan, some more specific than others, but my favorite ones have something in them that is accidental. This accidental something is the magic that can steer a painting, it can’t be duplicated, and it is something you go with which makes it all the more special. Bob Ross was not joking when he called them “happy accidents.”

If you enjoy this painting feel free to let me know. There is also a chance I am willing to sell this painting after all these year.  If you are interested in wall art prints click the link below and you can choose from a variety of print options and sizes. For reference, the original painting was 30″ x 20″ on gallery wrapped canvas with a gloss varnish.

Abstract landscape paintings are both abstract and a landscape. This method of painting can involve a great deal of creative expression either by altering scenery that exists in real life or by creating an imagined setting. The abstraction can be done without any symbolic significance or the abstraction can represent an idea and express the artists’ inner emotions and feelings. An abstract landscape painting can also be referred to as abstract nature art, and it is intentionally altered and different from realism and thus very interesting for both the artist and viewer.

The artist has freedom to use an unrealistic color palette, exaggerate forms, and use details and texture that express just about anything they are feeling. Abstract landscape paintings can offer the viewer another way of seeing the natural environment that allow them to go deeper into understanding an emotion. Some artists abstract the landscape by breaking it down into simple colors and shapes.  This minimalist approach gives greater yield to expression of the emotions.  Other artists go so far as to try and express the energy of life and nature through a use of exaggerated color, light, and texture.

Because an abstract landscape painting utilizes characteristics from the abstract art movement it is not uncommon to find unusual natural materials in the painting. For example an artist can add sea shells, a leaf, sand, string, and many other materials. These paintings often have visual or tactile texture. The artist can also emphasize qualities of light in different ways by using iridescent or metallic paint. Today artists can also create abstracted landscapes using digital mediums and altering the images they create. Photographic images of landscapes can be combined with others images or paintings that are completely unrelated using layering techniques.

As you can tell, it is through pure creativity that the abstract landscape painting displays an interwoven connection with human expression and the beauty that exists in the natural world. While the artist seeks to create a composition that is very unique, there is always a familiarity from the natural world that grounds the painting and creates an instant recognizable relationship for the viewer. It is this intrigue of strange and familiar that can capture the viewers attention. It also allows for a variety of interpretations that make for very fun and interesting works of art.

Example Abstract Landscapes

Minimalist Abstract Landscape Paintings

In the examples below the paintings are representative of a landscape but they focus on texture and color. Complex texture is combined with a simple color palette. They are an expression of inner feelings and not an actual place. Notice the one that looks like a waterfall doesn’t exactly continue the look of water as it turns into a green color.

Mixed Media Abstract Landscape Paintings

In the examples below the abstract landscapes are mixed media.  Some of them are based off of an actual photograph of a landscape.  The photograph has been altered various ways using programs.  Additional painted layers have been added to form an abstract landscape that is very unique. Most of these abstract artworks focus on light and shadow.  Some use geometric shapes and lines to divide up the softness of the landscape.  Others use colored texture or fluid shapes to create imaginary forms that could be any number of things in a landscape such as trees or rocks .  The unique forms, colors, and texture add a sense of drama and emotion that otherwise would not be there. Conclusion

In the end, abstract landscape paintings invite us to see the natural world in a whole new way—through color, texture, form, and emotion rather than literal representation. They blend the familiar with the unexpected, giving artists creative freedom and viewers room for personal interpretation. Whether inspired by real places or imagined worlds, these works connect us with both the beauty of nature and the power of expression.
