The Essence of Abstract Art

The love of abstract art stretches far beyond its vibrant colors and seemingly random shapes and forms. It captivates us because of its undeniable power to ignite our curiosity, to push the boundaries of our imagination, and to challenge our perception of what art can be. But what exactly constitutes abstract art, and can it portray some resemblance of realism and nature-inspired forms?

As you probably know abstract art was created out of a desire to create altered depictions of a subject or concept. But what you might not know is that the abstraction in art can extend itself slightly on a varying scale. And by varying the degree of abstraction some artists are able to manipulate and interpret reality to create entirely new compositions that can also retain the inspiration of the real world.

The Allure of Abstract Nature Art

Did you know that the top selling contemporary wall art today is abstract nature art or abstract art that includes some degree of realism? Artists and viewers alike are drawn to it because it speaks to them and it has a way of conjuring emotions. There is a strong appreciation for this type of abstract art that is centered around abstracting elements from the real world. This powerful art form is a creative interpretation of the delicate beauty of nature, but it is less about the subject and more about the feeling.

By observing nature and intuitively mimicking the delicate and impactful balances of her presentation, abstract artists are able to imbue many types of emotions through nature-inspired abstract form. When viewing these types of amazing abstract works they immediately convey something new and exciting to the senses all while still retaining a grounded familiarity. This bond of familiarity helps capture one’s imagination more easily and convey emotions that would otherwise not so easily be felt.

Examples of Nature-Inspired Abstract Art

Artist use many methods of abstracting nature including nature inspired forms, textures, and color combinations. For example just observing nature up close one might discover intelligently designed mathematical patterns or otherworldy views that give a altered perspective that can be used in art in new ways.

An artist may also mimic the same color combinations in a gorgeous sunset while excluding the forms of the landscape. Doing so, an artist is able to create minimalist abstract landscape art that is inspired by nature, and rather than being solely about the subjects landscape and what it is, the result is a connection at an emotional level . Other examples of abstract nature art could be the simple inclusion of organic shapes, blooming flowers, shimmering light patterns, or earthen texture into an artwork that is entirely abstract and different from these subjects. By just including a slight amount of realism there is an allure and connection that yields a deeper curiosity for what the viewer is observing.

Final Thoughts

Abstract nature art is a modern and contemporary invitation to explore the endless possibilities of creativity while also feeling connected to the world around us. It reminds us that art doesn’t always have to depict reality, but can instead be inspired by reality to manifest our innermost thoughts and emotions. Abstract nature art is a balance of the new and exciting with grounded familiarity. And the resulting artistic effects of nature-inspired abstract art can convey a gamut of emotions, from tranquility and happiness to amazement and reflection, forging a deep personal connection with the artwork.

What is Abstract Art?

Whether you love it or hate it, abstract art is a defining and revolutionary art form in the modern era.  It fostered a sense of freedom and facilitated a collective shift in the way society approached creativity and self-expression. So what is abstract art you ask?  Abstract art emerged in the early 1900s as a new and strange style within the modern art movement.  It marked a significant departure from the traditional art forms that sought to represent the world as it appeared.  Instead, painters and sculptors explored a new way of creating art that aimed to depart from reality and separate something from its original subject – thus giving birth to abstract art.

This may sound like a simple idea, but it was very controversial at the time.   It was so shocking that many first refused to accept it as art at first, but reluctantly got convinced.  Ever since its inception, there has been a continued interest in abstract art because of its profound ability to inspire our curiosity.  For artist and viewer alike, there is something so very poetic in abstract art in that it is completely unique and open-ended, allowing for mixed interpretation and amazing variety of personal meaning for each person.

Why Was Abstract Art Created?

The 20th century brought about tremendous changes that had a profound impact on society and culture.  By observing these changes it becomes apparent that abstract art was a natural expression of the times and the resulting effect that the machine age and technology had on society.  Advancements in technology, such as the widespread use of electricity, the invention of the camera, the telephone, and radio, transformed the way people lived and perceived the world.  Simultaneously, the machine age propelled progress in modes of transportation, offering unprecedented mobility via railroads, automobiles, boats, and planes.  These new global advancements opened up a progressive era of prosperity all while the potential of dystopian World Wars loomed on the horizon.

“Abstract art has come into being as a necessary expression of the feelings and thoughts of our age; it has added new dimensions to creative painting.”  ~ Leonard Brooks

The world changed a lot, and very quickly.  Naturally, culture and art changed too.  The rapid pace of progress during this era both exhilarated and unsettled individuals.  On one hand, the world witnessed a new era of prosperity and endless possibilities.  On the other hand, the looming threats of two devastating World Wars created a sense of uncertainty and anxiety.  It was amidst these contrasting emotions and shifting societal norms that abstract art found its voice.  Not only that but as society as a whole became less restrictive and more open, the very idea that art could be rebellious, individualistic, and imaginative was better able to be received among the critics and collectors.

Abstract Art Styles Exists On A Spectrum

Abstract art was first created with indifference and sometimes blatant rejection to how tradition defined art. It was born from an experiment and a need to explore in new creative ways. Thus, it only makes sense that abstraction is not restricted or confined by a concrete set of rules – it can vary on a spectrum from very slight to completely non-objective.

Wikipedia states: “Abstraction indicates a departure from reality in depiction of imagery in art. This departure from accurate representation can be slight, partial, or complete.”

“Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot physically see with his eyes… Abstract art enables the artist to perceive beyond the tangible, to extract the infinite out of the finite. It is the emancipation of the mind. It is an explosion into unknown areas.” ~ Arshile Gorky

It is a common misconception to think that all abstract art does not have a subject matter –  that it is made up of shapes, color, and form that represent nothing of the real world.  This type of art is known as non-representational art or non-objective art (developed by Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich), and while it is clearly a type of abstract art, the non-objective art style does not define the entirety of abstract art.  After all, the earliest known abstract art paintings were known to be done in the Cubism style.  Developed by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braques, these artists reduced and fragmented a realistic subject into strange forms and basic geometric shapes.  Often they would use a figure or portrait of an actual person that then goes through an abstraction process.  So within the spectrum of abstract art are a range of creative styles that are representational or expressive of their natural surroundings. This includes themes or subjects that are related to abstract nature art, or abstracted objects, landscapes, figures, cityscapes, and much more.

Over the years abstract art has evolved and been defined differently per the individual.  For some artists such as Jackson Pollock, abstract art is the result of enjoying the action of painting with grand gestural movements that are in touch with the way the paint drips onto the canvas.  Other artists who were influenced by Pollock, such as Jaison Cianelli, combined the idea of action painting with abstracting a subject such as a landscape.

“With abstract art I’m not trying to create a masterpiece, I’m trying to master peace.” ~ Jaison Cianelli

Today abstract art is still a popular style for creating art, and it’s not always painted with a brush and canvas.  It’s important to remember photography or digital art can be abstract, as well as installation art and sculptures. Contemporary art today utilizes the abstraction process in any number of ways, with a wide range of styles that could be related to inner emotions, action painting, and abstracted subjects such as landscapes, water scenes, animals, famous figures, and more.

Abstract Artists Are Very Skilled In Their Own Way

Just about anyone can fill a canvas with paint, so in a way creating abstract artwork is easy right? Well, not exactly. The style and techniques of abstract art can vary from very simple to extremely hard, but distinguishing oneself in the art world by producing high-quality and unique abstract artworks is very hard. It’s also a common fallacy that abstract art is made by artists who can’t draw and have no academic training. Historically speaking, the original abstract artists were all trained in ancient traditions and could easily paint like classical artists, they just chose not to. Even today, many, if not all, professional abstract artists start out in realism creating compositions with a high degree of skill. There are also new unbelievable talents in the use of combining many other mediums besides paint.  Abstract art is created with literally anything on hand with an array of technologies at the artist’s disposal.  For example fabric, recycled waste, 3D printed items, written words, digital art, photographs, and natural material are all acceptable mediums in a visual abstract art piece.

Not always, but sometimes, abstract art can look like very simple works of art that anybody can accomplish.  So we are often left with the question of what makes the art special.  For example some say that even a child could create the large color field paintings by Mark Rothko.  And while Rothko’s paintings continue to increase in incredible value today, you have to remember that these are historical pieces that mark a great period in art history.  Rothko believed his fields of color were spiritual planes that could tap into our most basic human emotions.  Whether you agree or not, pioneering a style of art that represents a new idea or theory is not easy and not many will ever succeed at it.  Not only that but some of Rothko’s paintings are very large, so they are more of an experience much like Pollock’s work, where the size of the art creates a presence that has to be felt in person to be truly appreciated.

Abstract Art Creates A Variety Of Feelings

Many people collect abstract art as decoration but also because they feel a connection to the overall emotions and energy that the art gives off. The best abstract artwork can literally change a living space and create a more beautiful atmosphere.  The wonder of abstract art is that anyone can take what they see and interpret it however they want.  And over time there is a very dynamic relationship with the art because of its open and free nature. This dynamic relationship gives life to the art and allows people to enjoy and receive it very differently, which is quite a unique characteristic.

“It [abstract art] should be enjoyed just as music is enjoyed after a while you may like it or you may not.” ~ Jackson Pollock

Abstract art is really a creative and evolving art style that resonated with new ideas both in the past and today.  There are many varieties within it that can be appreciated in different ways since it is so free.  It is also always changing with new technological advancements and ideas of expression.  So from subject matter to how it is created, abstract art lives on a spectrum of interpretation of what it was and what it will be.

A Stress Free State Of Mind

There is a silence in the early morning and late at night. It empowers your creative mind to step into the drivers seat without doubt or anxiety. It’s there naturally before sleep and when awakened, and can exist throughout your normal daily activities if you let it. Science calls this silence the theta state. Brain waves during theta state are free flowing and occur without censorship or guilt. When performing a task in the theta state you are mentally disengaged. Actions are automatic and intuitive, giving you a stress-free state and allowing you to focus and imagine with ease.

Appreciating Abstract Art

Technology and the modern industrial world is embedded into our society and operates at a busy pace. There is not much that we can do to escape it. We tend to mentally engage in the processes of our lives all too often without ever letting the relaxed state of mind take its course. This practice is actually a destroyer of a precious balance with the creative mind and the theta state.

Many artists reacted to our modern society by creating abstract art in the intuitive theta state, consciously or unconsciously. And understanding this very basic cultural reaction will give you a greater appreciation for abstract art and the artist. The action of painting for an intuitive abstract artist is a natural creative process that does not involve a great deal of thought. By not “trying” and just “doing” the art becomes the experience, the experience becomes the art.

In this sense abstract paintings are reminding us that it is healthy to mentally disengage, and even much needed in our current world. The artwork and the artist say without words that we should be free to express and explore our creativity without defining and categorizing things all the time.

Modern Art

Let us start with modern art.  Modern art is a classification of an art period that includes artwork produced during the period extending roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s.

It’s important to note that within the modern art period many experimental and expressive styles exist.

The modern art period was started by artists that had an experimental spirit for expressing new ideas and methods.  They explored beyond traditional techniques and pushed the boundaries of art.

Impressionist Claude Monet and post-impressionist Vincent van Gogh were key figures.

According to art scholars and historians the modern art movement ended around the 1970s when the term postmodern started to be used and pop art became the new thing.

However, there is a grey area here because in general most people will use the term to describe art being created today if it has the same characteristics of new experimental expression.  And this makes sense because the word modern means “relating to the present or recent times as opposed to the remote past.”

Abstract Art

And that brings us to abstract art.  You might be thinking, what is abstract art?  And, is abstract art modern art?

Abstraction is a painting style classified within the modern art movement in the early 1900s. So yes, it is a type of modern art.  Abstract was a truly revolutionary style and a way for artists to create a departure from reality.

Wikipedia states: “Abstraction indicates a departure from reality in depiction of imagery in art. This departure from accurate representation can be slight, partial, or complete.”

Within the abstract style are many different spectrums and classifications of abstraction.

The earliest known abstract style was Cubism which started in 1908 and was developed by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braques. This abstract technique reduced the forms into basic geometric shapes.

Eventually, the abstract art style included art that did not try to represent reality at all, and this was called non-objective abstract painting. Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky is generally credited with creating the first purely non-objective abstract painting in 1910.

And in America, abstract art was not known until 1940 when the expressionist style of Jackson Pollock caught the eyes of the world.

And because abstract art is a style of painting and not a classification of an art period, abstract paintings are still being created today.

Contemporary Art

Finally, that brings us to the current day.  Right now, we use the term contemporary art to define art as being created in our lifetime or in the current present moment.

So any artwork being created right now is technically contemporary no matter what the style.

But what has happened is that people use contemporary art to describe unique art created in new and different ways from the 1970s until now.

It is important to know that contemporary art refers to all art produced today utilizing the many technological advances – and that includes paintings, digital art, sculpture, photography, installation, performance, and video art.

Large Abstract Art Paintings - Oversized Big Abstract Painting For Sale

When it comes to buying abstract art, size truly does matter. Abstract art is a modern art form that allows for freedom and creativity. It evokes emotions and engages the senses in a way that other art forms simply cannot replicate. In order to fully experience and appreciate an abstract painting, one must witness it at a grand scale.

Large abstract art, or even HUGE abstract art, allows for a deeper connection and a more profound impact. In this article, we will explore why buying a large abstract painting or print is a worthwhile investment.

The Essence of Abstract Art

Abstract art is different.  It naturally lends itself to the senses of freedom and expression. It captivates us because of its undeniable power to ignite our curiosity, to push the boundaries of our imagination, and to challenge our perception of what art can be.

An abstract painting or print has the ability to evoke different responses from each viewer. It sparks conversation and encourages interpretation. The larger the artwork, the more impactful these responses can be. So you will want to buy abstract art big enough to envelop you.  You have to experience it!

Big Colors That Enrich

Color is such a big part of abstract art. Without the artwork’s larger than life expression of color it does not really transcend into the realm of the senses.  Colors evoke emotions and they affect mood.

Large colorful abstract art paintings allow for emotions to be felt in their full force. The scale of the painting envelops the viewer, creating an immersive experience. Every brushstroke, color combination, and textural quality becomes more vivid on a larger scale, enhancing the emotional connection and evoking a powerful response towards the painting.

Color is very suggestive and has an impact on our mood and can impact how we feel – happy or sad, excited or calm.  Not only that, but color can have a positive affect on the entire feeling in a space, whether a living room, office, or hallway.  When there is an impactful color from a large abstract painting that coordinates with the colors in a room, the artwork creates a balance that enlivens and enriches the space.

Beauty Of Simple and Complex

Many collectors appreciate abstract art that is beautifully simple and yet somehow complex.  This mysterious balance of two very different qualities takes the enjoyment of a piece to the next level, and it usual happens with very large abstract paintings.

An example of this duality could be that the artist performed a balancing act of refined artistic skill while being a totally open channel for free expression that is also raw.  It does not seem possible, and that’s the beauty.

And this wonderful dichotomy that I am speaking of is actually further enhanced with large abstract art. The very large scale of the art provides ample room for exploration and contemplation of a dual nature; it allows for intricate details to be appreciated up close, while also providing a broader more emotional context when viewed from a distance.

The Power Of Presence

If you are buying a huge abstract painting you are making a statement in your living space. Large abstract art has a commanding presence that demands attention.  It naturally becomes the focal point of any space, captivating the viewer upon entering the room. The sheer size and scale of the artwork create a statement piece that adds depth and character to any environment. Whether it’s a home, office, or public space, large abstract art elevates the ambiance and creates an unforgettable visual impact.

Conclusion

In conclusion, buying large abstract art is an investment worth considering. It allows for a deeper experience of emotions, engages conversation, and creates a powerful presence in any space. The versatility and open-ended nature of abstract art provide endless opportunities for interpretation and exploration. So, why buy large abstract art? Because it offers an extraordinary artistic experience that is simply unparalleled. Allow yourself to be captivated by the grand scale and immerse yourself in the world of abstract art.

Purchasing large abstract wall art can be a little intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. By following this simple advice you will be less likely to get stuck with an expensive large painting that doesn’t seem to fit in. With a little patience and a keen eye you can have a lot of fun picking out your perfect abstract artwork. In the end you will get years of bliss out of your new addition. So let’s begin.

Large Canvas Wall Art Abstract Painting For Sale

Choose Abstract Art That Moves You

Figuring out what you like is easy. Often times, you feel it right away. With large abstract art, the feeling you get is just about all you need to go by. There are many other factors like size, cost, and where it will be hung, but this is a good place to start. Your instincts will guide you, but give it a little time. See what you come back to. You will always go back and observe the ones you like the most. They find a place in your heart and stick around. It’s a connection, almost like the art is calling you.

Abstraction in art is playful, it encourages the imagination and propels the mind to perceive visual language at an emotional level. In my opinion, great abstract art never leaves the viewer stranded for long. The composition is not obnoxious or devoid of beauty. There has to be some sort of connection that draws you in so that you always return to it. It may mean that the composition contains something reminiscent in the natural world and you can relate to it and form your own unique place in your mind. Sometimes it just means the colors themselves and the grand encompassing size resonate with you so much that you want to be surrounded by their beauty. Or perhaps the textural elements are so intriguing because of the patterns and shapes that you can’t stop staring.

Research The Artist

It would not hurt to do a little research. Get to know about the artist and have a look at their portfolio. See if they are currently creating new works because that’s always a bonus. Later on down the road you may want to reach out them and consider purchasing another one of their works. Not only does it look better to have multiple pieces of the same artist on your walls, but artists generally will give a discount to those that repeat buy.

Understand what you are considering buying. Is it an original paintings? A canvas print? If it is mass produced and sold from a large retail store or popular websites, there’s a good chance it’s a common themed piece. That doesn’t mean the art is bad, it just means that the forms and colors are very popularized, and may come across as boring in the hearts and minds of onlookers including yourself.

Think About Interior Decoration And Color Relationships

Having awareness of the relationship that exists between the art and the living space is so very important and even more so with large abstract art. Whether it is nature inspired elements in the art, the colors, or the textures, you will want to think about them and consider how these elements can exist in the room where the wall art will be hung.

The most important thing is to consider are:

  1. The size of the wall space and size of artwork.
  2.  The color of your wall.
  3. The arrangement and color of your main furniture items.

When you are buying large oversized art you have to realize that these pieces stand alone as a focal point on the wall. So measure your wall space and mark the wall with a masking tape border of the painting to help gain a better understanding of an appropriate size.

If your main furniture items or walls are white or grey you’re in luck, you can pretty much match any artwork to it. But if there is more color you have to consider how those colors interact with the colors in the artwork. For example, if your couch or walls have red tones does the artwork have any red in it? Or if your furniture has gold legs, perhaps a gold frame around the painting would look nice.

Then comes the easy part. Once you have that sorted out you can think about matching the room around the wall art by simply adding or changing basic decor items such as pillows, blankets, plants, curtains, textured rugs, etc. Making the right choices in adding these little details can give greater balance and richness to both. For example, if the artwork appears to shimmer or has smooth soft lines you can add a faux silk throw on your bed or couch. Or if the abstract is floral or beach related, perhaps you want to add a plant to compliment and bring life into the overall room experience.

Use The Wall To Enhance The Art

In the examples below the wall is a lighter tone than the main colors in the artwork. The wall space is large so a larger canvas is used. Texture or panelling on the wall can be used to add more compelling design behind the art because the canvas art is without a traditional frame. In these examples the wall compliments the artwork.

Add Colors That Pop In A Neutral Room

White, cream, and grey based tones are the easiest to add wall art to especially of you have a variety of color in the art. The washed out room craves color so why not add the color with a large abstract canvas painting or print. Ideally, toss in a decor items in the room that match the large wall art because this helps cohesiveness. Notice you can visually frame the canvas with chairs or make the painting a focal point above a sofa or bed.

Abstract landscape paintings are both abstract and a landscape. This method of painting can involve a great deal of creative expression either by altering scenery that exists in real life or by creating an imagined setting. The abstraction can be done without any symbolic significance or the abstraction can represent an idea and express the artists’ inner emotions and feelings. An abstract landscape painting can also be referred to as abstract nature art, and it is intentionally altered and different from realism and thus very interesting for both the artist and viewer.

The artist has freedom to use an unrealistic color palette, exaggerate forms, and use details and texture that express just about anything they are feeling. Abstract landscape paintings can offer the viewer another way of seeing the natural environment that allow them to go deeper into understanding an emotion. Some artists abstract the landscape by breaking it down into simple colors and shapes.  This minimalist approach gives greater yield to expression of the emotions.  Other artists go so far as to try and express the energy of life and nature through a use of exaggerated color, light, and texture.

Because an abstract landscape painting utilizes characteristics from the abstract art movement it is not uncommon to find unusual natural materials in the painting. For example an artist can add sea shells, a leaf, sand, string, and many other materials. These paintings often have visual or tactile texture. The artist can also emphasize qualities of light in different ways by using iridescent or metallic paint. Today artists can also create abstracted landscapes using digital mediums and altering the images they create. Photographic images of landscapes can be combined with others images or paintings that are completely unrelated using layering techniques.

As you can tell, it is through pure creativity that the abstract landscape painting displays an interwoven connection with human expression and the beauty that exists in the natural world. While the artist seeks to create a composition that is very unique, there is always a familiarity from the natural world that grounds the painting and creates an instant recognizable relationship for the viewer. It is this intrigue of strange and familiar that can capture the viewers attention. It also allows for a variety of interpretations that make for very fun and interesting works of art.

Example Abstract Landscapes

Minimalist Abstract Landscape Paintings

In the examples below the paintings are representative of a landscape but they focus on texture and color. Complex texture is combined with a simple color palette. They are an expression of inner feelings and not an actual place. Notice the one that looks like a waterfall doesn’t exactly continue the look of water as it turns into a green color.

Mixed Media Abstract Landscape Paintings

In the examples below the abstract landscapes are mixed media.  Some of them are based off of an actual photograph of a landscape.  The photograph has been altered various ways using programs.  Additional painted layers have been added to form an abstract landscape that is very unique. Most of these abstract artworks focus on light and shadow.  Some use geometric shapes and lines to divide up the softness of the landscape.  Others use colored texture or fluid shapes to create imaginary forms that could be any number of things in a landscape such as trees or rocks .  The unique forms, colors, and texture add a sense of drama and emotion that otherwise would not be there. Abstract Landscape Painting Ideas

Are you interested in creating your own abstract landscape painting? All art needs to be hung somewhere. Having awareness of the relationship that exists between the art and the space is important. Making the right choices can give greater balance and richness to both. Many pick out art that they love and resonate with first and then decide if it will work in a particular decor setting.  If that’s the case you just may need to redecorate the interior slightly to coordinate with the art. When buying a print there are many factors that play into your decision making process so it is beneficial to know as much as you can before buying.

Choosing Printed Mediums

  • Metal prints are quickly becoming the new favorite because of superior image clarity, modern look, and low cost shipping rate. They have excellent pop with a luminous quality in the artwork unlike any other medium. The image is directly printed onto 1/16″ thick sheet of aluminum that has been specially treated with a white primer and a high gloss finish. A wooden frame is then adhered to the back so that when you hang the artwork it is offset from the wall and appears to float.
  • Canvas prints are one of the most popular choices when reproducing large abstract artwork. Canvas holds up well over time and has a quality feel. The texture of canvas introduces a painterly element but tends to soften the detail somewhat. Canvas prints are finished with either a gloss or matte protective finish. We recommend a gloss finish for more depth and color in the image. Canvas prints can be hung with or without a frame. A canvas print without a frame looks nice gallery wrapped with mirrored artwork on the sides or black sides.  The thicker gallery size stretcher bars gives a minimalist contemporary look while offering the appropriate visual size.
  • Acrylic prints are glossy and have a glass like feel because the art is printed directly to the back of the 1/4″ material. Like metal, the modern panel seems to float off the wall for a unique contemporary look. Acrylic is very durable and also like metal has a low cost shipping rate. Acrylic prints are also a great choice for a humid environment or an artwork that has water elements.
  • A print on fine art paper is a great choice when framing. Picture Rag is hands-down our favorite paper. It produces a gorgeous image with a soft feel and a somewhat luminous quality. It is a very thick heavy weight paper, thicker than canvas. Being acid-free and 100% cotton rag it’s the best choice for archivability. Other great choices are Somerset Velvet, Archival Matte, and Metallic Paper.

Coordination

harbor-interior-wall-art-1Your choice of artwork may change based on the interior space you are working with. You may also consider changing the design elements or color of the space to match the art. Take a look at the main colors in the room and whether or not some of the colors exist within the art. You can also add small accents in the room with the exact same colors found in the artwork to compliment the relationship.  A living room that is muted or grey can drastically change with a large colorful print. Then by using something as simple as pillows that match the artwork you end up adding that much needed color coordination.

Believe it or not, texture and forms are also important.  Some artwork has qualities similar to certain fabrics and materials such as wood, glass, or metal.  If does well to try to match some of the qualities.   For example, a heavily visually textured artwork works better when objects in the rooms are also heavily textured like a knitted throw blanket.  If the artwork has floral objects in it, you may want to consider plant life in the space as well.

Size and Orientation

The great thing about a print is that you can order it in many different sizes based on your need.  To better figure out the best size, before buying a print measure the wall and put up masking tape where the corners of the artwork would be. Usually a larger size has greater visual and emotional impact. But choosing a size is also about finding balance with your space and the empty wall. Larger wider pieces do well to compliment furniture or a bed.  If there are other pieces of art they are usually hung at the same horizontal viewing line. If the ceiling is high a tall or large portrait piece is appropriate.

Overall Energy and Emotion

Art can express to you energies and feelings that are of many emotions – be it peace, excitement, mystery, sophistication, etc. Art can also introduce elements that reference the earth, water, fire, wind, and metal. Ask yourself what elements are already in the space. You might want to try to find a good balance that you feel comfortable with. Consider what the room is used for and what it needs to compliment it. A boring room might need more energy or vice versa. Studying color theory and feng shui may help you.

Lighting

It helps to hang the artwork in a location with good natural lighting to bring out those colors in the day. If you want to accentuate it at night as a central piece consider overhead lighting or having a tall lamp near the artwork. You will want to be aware that a gloss medium can add glare especially a print on metal or acrylic and you will have to adjust lighting as needed.
